West Bloomfield’s Max Dubin was a hit in his senior year. While playing forward and defense, he racked up 18 goals and 21 assists. He was named MVP of the OAA White.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — Rick Reed had a somewhat difficult time explaining just what kind of hockey player Max Dubin is last week.

He’s not your prototypical power forward, yet he can score with the best of them.

He’s not a stay-at-home defenseman, but when needed, he could lock down just about anyone in his own zone.

So, as Reed tried to sum up Dubin, he referred to a more simple description.

“He’s just a stud of a player,” the West Bloomfield High coach said with a laugh. “He really is.”

The other coaches in the Oakland Activities Association White Division agreed, casting their votes to name Dubin the Most Valuable Player for the 2011-12 season.

“He came out of the triple-A program from last year, and I don’t think he had a certain fit with us,” Reed added. “He just had a great feel for the game and a motor that never quit. He reminds me of a Darren Helm-type player — great speed, always on the go. He was our captain, a leader that stepped up for his team every way he could.”

Dubin finished the season with 18 goals and 21 assists, and he did so while playing a quarter of the Lakers’ games on defense.

“Very well-deserving of the MVP nod,” Reed boasted. “I think there were a number of kids in the division that could have earned this, but I think other coaches saw what Max did for and meant to our team. They saw how good he was all over the ice, and I think that’s why he got this.”

“I was really surprised,” said Dubin, who also earned a nod on the All-State honorable-mention team. “I felt happy that people saw me the way they did, but I didn’t expect it. Really, there were so many guy on this team that helped. I felt like they set me up for everything I got.”

Dubin helped West Bloomfield to a 12-12-1 record this season.

“This is a great feeling,” he added. “Something I didn’t expect, but a true honor.”
