DMC Sports Medicine offers free clinics for runners of all ages and skill sets

BIRMINGHAM — Pounding the pavement is a task tackled by so many as health and fitness tends to take center stage during the summer months.

With that in mind, those lacing up their running shoes are being offered a bit of assistance from the Detroit Medical Center and its Run with DMC clinics.

“We’re entering the peak season for running,” said Sarah Collica, a spokesperson for the DMC networks. “There’s a lot people can do to prevent injury and improve their overall skills and health. That’s what we’re putting our trainers out there to do. … For anyone that runs, this is the perfect opportunity to better themselves.”

DMC Sports Medicine is hosting free clinics for runners at 9 a.m. July 20 and 6 p.m. July 22 at American Home Fitness in Birmingham.

Certified Athletic Trainers from the DMC will be on hand to educate, demonstrate, answer questions and then help anyone in attendance get out and run.

“There’s going to be a little bit of everything,” Collica said. “They will speak on proper techniques, nutrition, footwear and so on.”

The main objective, according Collica and Allison Cortellini, a trainer and the sports medicine outreach manager with DMC, is injury prevention.

“We see quite a few (injuries) associated with overuse,” Cortellini said. She will be at one of the free clinics. “What you have is people doing too much, too fast. The education aspect we will cover talks about footwear, nutrition, ways of preparing to run, how many miles to cover and other basics. It’s a lot of preventative care we like to cover.”

The first half of the clinic will center on the educational aspect, as well as questions and answers.

The second half, Collica said, is more hands-on.

“We get out there and run with people and work on a lot of things,” she said.

“It’s really tailored to the people that show up,” Cortellini added. “This is the time of year, people are getting ready and training for their 5ks, their half marathons and the full marathons. The biggest thing for us is to help prepare them to accomplish their goals and do it as successfully as possible.”
