MACOMB TOWNSHIP — In just the third year of its existence, the Macomb Dakota girls golf team is making a name for itself on the links.
The Cougars’ golf team won the Macomb Area Conference White Division tournament, which took place at Oct. 3 the Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Macomb Township. Dakota bested Grosse Pointe North to pick up the win.
The Cougars (6-2, 6-2 MAC White at press time) won on a tiebreaker after both teams tallied scores of 382 after each team’s highest four scores were counted. Dakota golfer Peyton 106 proved to be a lower score than GPN’s next lowest, giving Dakota the win.
Grosse Pointe North went 7-1 to win the MAC White regular-season title.
“Anybody could’ve won that tournament,” Dakota coach Harrison Stackpole said. “We were just lucky that our next-lowest score was a little better than (Grosse Pointe North’s) next lowest.”
The victory comes after Dakota placed third at the 2013 Macomb County girls golf tournament in September.
Dakota’s Paige Hamden shot an 88, tallying the lowest score of the day. Grosse Pointe North’s Jordan Parent had the next-lowest total, shooting a 90 on the day.
“The girls have been playing really well,” Stackpole said. “We actually beat Grosse Pointe North in an earlier match, and they hadn’t lost in a couple of years. What this does is gives the girls some confidence going to Dearborn next for our (Michigan High School Athletic Association) Division 1 regional.”
That regional is set for Oct. 11 at the Dearborn Country Club. The regional features Bloomfield Hills High, Dearborn High, Detroit Cass Tech, Fraser High, Grosse Pointe South, Macomb Dakota, Macomb L’Anse Creuse North, Utica Ford II, Troy High, Troy Athens, Utica High and West Bloomfield.
Madison Solecki, Emma Hill and Alyssa Kujawa shot 95, 98 and 101, respectively, in Dakota’s divisional win.
Fraser finished third at the league meet but made things interesting, as the Ramblers tallied a 383.
Utica Ford II (390) also wasn’t far off; Sterling Heights Stevenson shot a 489.
Stackpole said he’s hoping his team can build some momentum and battle its way to the 2013 MHSAA Division 1 state finals, which are slated for Oct. 18-19 at the Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing.
“We’re in a tough regional, but if we keep playing the way we’re playing, then maybe we can find our way up to (East Lansing),” Stackpole said.
Marysville romps in MAC Blue tourney
The Marysville High girls golf team was dominant in its win at the MAC Blue tournament, which took place Oct. 3 at the Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Macomb Township.
Each Marysville player broke 100, as the Vikings tallied a 370 in the win. Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (2-5, 2-5 MAC Blue at press time) finished second with a 427.
Marysville’s Jasmine Sattler and LCN’s Megan Sarotte both shot an 88 to lead their respective teams.
St. Clair Shores Lakeview (428), Clawson (437) and Port Huron High (no team score) placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
