Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood’s girls swimming and diving team won the program’s first ever MHSAA state title Nov. 19 at Oakland University.
The Cranes, runners-up the past two years, took home the crown in Division 3 after amassing 328.5 points.
“I couldn’t be any more proud,” Cranbrook coach Tony Kurth said.
Cranbrook placed plenty of swimmers in points-earning positions at the finals, highlighted by several top-eight finishes.
Leading things off, the 200 medley relay team of Alexa Resetar, Molly Laubernds, Julia Briggs and Milon Crawford placed fourth.
Kylie Powrie took first place in the 200 freestyle, while Emme Reasoner was sixth.
Resetar finished sixth, and Kendall Young finished eighth in the 200 IM.
In the 50 freestyle, Cranbrook’s Crawford tied Country Day’s MacLean tied for third place, while Cranbrook’s Madeline Montgomery took seventh.
Reasoner finished third in the 100 butterfly. Her teammate, Briggs, was fifth in the race.
In the 100 freestyle, Crawford finished in third, followed by Lara Kokubo and Montgomery in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Powrie picked up her second individual title of the day in the 500 freestyle; Laubernds placed fifth in the race.
Crawford, Montgomery, Reasoner and Kokubo teamed up to take second in the 200 freestyle relay.
Resetar finished in second in the 100 backstroke.
And in the 400 freestyle relay, the Cranes took the title thanks to Laubernds, Montgomery, Powrie and Kokubo finishing first.
Cranbrook needed every point it could to fend off some tough competition, led by East Grand Rapids, the team that edged the Cranes the past two years for the D-3 title. The tables were turned, though, this year, as East Grand Rapids finished in second place.
“You have to expect tough competition at every state meet,” Kurth said.
A key to the title, the coach said, was that his swimmers “believed in each other.”
“They grew strong together and did not let anything from the outside deter them. We took care of business (in the preliminaries) and completed our run with the utmost class.”
Local swimmers shine
Cranbrook’s swimmers and divers weren’t the only ones taking home medals Nov. 19, as local athletes excelled across the three state finals.
“The greater Detroit area has an amazing talent pool of swimmers,” Kurth said. “When you look at all the three state division winners over the years, there are local area schools consistently winning. I am now proud that Cranbrook-Kingswood can now be mentioned with some of those winning teams.”
