AUBURN HILLS — Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day boys golf won the Division 2 regional June 6 at Fieldstone Golf Club.
The Yellowjackets finished with a team-total 318 for the crown. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep was second with 324 and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood was third with 329. The trio of squads qualified for the state final June 14-15 at Grand Valley State University.
Orchard Lake St. Mary's (330), South Lyon East (331), Bloomfield Hills Andover (336), Armada High (346), St. Clair High (352), Warren Woods Tower (357), St. Clair Shores South Lake (369), St. Clair Shores Lake Shore (383) and Madison Heights Lamphere (397) made up the rest of the field.
Country Day coach Dan Berger said he could sense a calmness and confidence from his team heading to the event.
"I came to peace that we were going to play the way that we are able to play," he said. "I couldn't be more proud."
Each squad sent out five golfers; the top four scores counting toward the team. The top three teams along with the top three individuals on non-qualifying teams head to the state final.
Individually, St. Mary's Kitt Koolwick (76), Andover's Brandon Steingold (77) and Avondale's Nikolas Senkowski qualified.
Country Day's Rishi Patel was the tournament's medalist with a 1-under 71.
Patel hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation.
"Even though my putting wasn't perfect, hitting that many greens really helped," he said.
Patel qualified for the final last season as an individual and said that he is even more excited now that his team will be with him.
"Even though I made it last year, there was something missing," he said. "It just makes it more fun with them there, because this is a high school team event."
Berger said this win doesn't change his expectations at the state meet for the team, that it'll continue to try and play the best it's capable of playing.
"This is my ninth year, and one thing I learned is putting unncessary expectations on yourself only ratchets up the pressure," he said.
