Although there may be opportunities to play occasional pickup games afterward, most aren’t likely to play at an organized level again, and do so with a group of teammates that can become like family.

While that reality is tough for some to take, others get to delay it for a while.

DETROIT — Three years after starring together at Utica Eisenhower, Grant Harrison and Justin Schueneman are starting alongside one another at the next level.

The duo have continued their soccer careers roughly 45 minutes down the road from their alma mater, serving on the back line at the University of Detroit Mercy.

Harrison is a junior center back and Schueneman, a sophomore, is slotted at outside back. Both are helping to lead a Titans defense that has recorded three shutouts so far this season.

All of those things that have been part of the college football game day experience at campuses across the country will be available to Oakland University students and alumni this fall, as the school’s club football team has been permitted to play its home games on campus.

Although Oakland’s inaugural season was 2013, until this year, the team’s home field was Auburn Hills Civic Center Park.

After the men’s and women’s squads each had a program-best third-place finish at the 2015 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the women’s team went on to finish first at the indoor championships in 2016, giving the Golden Grizzlies their first league title.
