Clawson High wrestling falls in regional semifinal

The Clawson High team wrestling season came to a close Feb. 13 at Richmond High.

The Trojan fell to Croswell-Lexington 56-18 in a Division 3 regional semifinal.

“It wasn’t our best performance. They’re a tough team. Actually, a really good team,” coach Keil Jorgensen said. “In this case, I wish we had wrestled to the level of our opponents, but it is what it is. We knew it was going to be a tough fight.”

Clawson finishes 29-8 overall and with its third straight district championship. Croswell-Lexington went on to lose to Richmond in the regional title.

Richmond has won the last three state championships, and Jorgensen believes having his young team take on upper-level squads can only help it in the future.

“This should be an eye-opener for them. Those teams have a lot of seniors and are a veteran group. We start a majority of sophomores and freshmen,” Jorgensen said. “If you don’t do the little things, you don’t have a chance to win a match against teams like them. You have to wrestle flawless. If you skip on one thing, it’ll cost you the match.”

Anthony Pizzo, Wyatt Remillard and Nick Thousand won matches for the Trojans, all by pin.

Overall, Jorgensen called it a successful season.

“We beat some good teams and lost to better teams. There were a couple duals that were a little closer than it should have been, but we’d come back and avenge that loss,” he said. “I think they improved considerably well over the season. I always want to see my teams be a little meaner, and that’s probably the toughest thing to get out of a younger program.”

Jorgensen says goodbye to a group of seniors who helped resurrect a program that was, at times, canceled due to a lack of wrestlers.

“You can’t really put into words what the seniors have done. The core group that stuck with it when the program was at its bottom and to where it is now, I have a lot of respect for them,” Jorgensen said. “That’s not an easy thing to do, and to have success individually and as a team. I’m very happy for them. They’re a great group of kids.”
