MADISON HEIGHTS — In a game that was a lot closer than the final score, Allen Park Cabrini beat Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest for a Division 3 regional softball championship.

The Monarchs won 6-1, getting four runs in the top of the seventh inning.

“When you play one game, the records get thrown out the window, and it’s about executing,” Cabrini coach Debbie Norman said, as her team goes to 29-5 overall and Northwest finishes 15-12.

Cabrini took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Ashley Gordon singled to score Sydney Lankford.

“The momentum, I think, was with Northwest; they were putting people on base,” Norman said. “Then Ashley got that big hit, and I think that one run across took some pressure off for our kids.”

The Crusaders’ run came from an RBI single from Paytin Riethmeier to score Emily Kimmel in the bottom of the third.

“I think maybe they were a more experienced team and handled the pressure there at the end,” Northwest coach Jeff Ludwig said. “We had them worried, but they fought through it, so kudos to Cabrini.”

Ludwig added that he’s proud of his young squad, which only has two seniors on the roster.

“We’re going to work hard in the offseason to fill those positions. This run can only be beneficial,” he said.

Up next, Cabrini plays the winner of the Reese High regional at 2 p.m. June 11 at Saginaw Valley State University.
