OAKLAND COUNTY — In an event that many wrestling coaches use to gauge their strengths and weaknesses, Detroit Novi Catholic Central once again proved its mettle, winning its fifth straight Oakland County championship Dec. 21 at Oxford Middle School with 307 points.
Oxford High came in second after totalling 247 points; Clarkston High (177.5) was third, Rochester High (172.5) fourth and Ortonville Brandon (170) fifth.
Making up the rest of the field were Walled Lake Central (166), Walled Lake Northern (143), West Bloomfield High (138.5), Holly High (138), Waterford Kettering (133), Rochester Hills Stoney Creek (126), South Lyon High (123.5), Rochester Adams (112.5), Lakeland High (110.5), Southfield High (110), Troy High (105), Lake Orion High (95.5), Hazel Park High (80.5), Birmingham Seaholm (79), Pontiac High (77), Farmington Hills Harrison (74.5), Walled Lake Western (73.5), Novi High (71), Auburn Hills Avondale (69), Waterford Mott (65), Farmington High (63), Birmingham Groves (62), Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (60) and Ferndale High (58.5).
Rochester coach Frank Lafferty said his team was a pleasant surprise in the tournament, as the Falcons came in without grapplers in three of the weight classes and still finished fourth.
“We didn’t really have a good record going into the tournament because our schedule was so tough. We were beat up, so the guys came around,” he said. “With all of our injuries, we didn’t have a chance to see how good we were yet, but we really wrestled well in this tournament.”
