Boys golf crowns individual and team champions

The boys golf season came to a close June 15-16 at various sites across the state. The tournaments consisted of 36 holes, with each team sending out five golfers and counting their top four scores toward the team total.

Here’s a look at how each division shaped up, and which teams and individuals were crowned state champions.

Division 1 at Grand Valley State University
After trailing by eight strokes on the first day, Birmingham Brother Rice blitzed the field in round two, finishing with a 602 total. The Warriors shot 304 in the first round, behind Battle Creek Lakeview’s 296, but rallied with 298 the following morning. Lakeview shot 307 for a 603 mark and second place.

Sean Friel (148), Kyle Gaines (149), Lucas Belanger (152), Jeremy Ball (153) and Jeremy Glod (168) took the course for the Warriors.

Muskegon Mona Shores (608), Traverse City West (611), Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central (612), Novi Detroit Catholic Central (619), Grosse Pointe South (620), Pinckney (622), Saline High (624), Plymouth High (626), Grand Blanc High (629), Midland Dow High (643), Canton High (656) and Troy High (665) made up the rest of the field.

Individually, Lakeview’s Matt Garland took top honors with a 141 total, four shots ahead of Dearborn High’s Evan Bowser.

Division 2 at Ferris State University
Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood dominated its division, shooting 299 on the first day for a 12-stroke lead on DeWitt High and then extended that margin with a 289 on the last 18 holes to finish with 588.

DeWitt was closest behind with 615; Big Rapids finished third with 621.

Dylan Deogun led the Cranes with 144, followed by Michael Ray (146), Alex Papa (147), Griffin Smith (154) and Kylee He (161).

Haslett High (622), Tecumseh High (626), East Grand Rapids (627), Grand Rapids South Christian (628), Grand Rapids Christian (631), Mason High (635), Marshall High (636), Petoskey High (646), Bloomfield Hills Andover (656), Mount Pleasant High (658), Auburn Hills Avondale (666) and St. Johns High (672) round out the field.

Individually, Hamilton High’s Nick Carlson and DeWitt’s Tyler Polulak both shot 139, but Carlson won the tiebreaker. Alex Dombrowski (140) of Gaylord was third.

Division 3 at Michigan State University
Jackson Lumen Christi took top honors with a 596, beating out Hanover-Horton’s and Grosse Ile’s 602 for the title.

Grand Rapids West Catholic (603), Lansing Catholic (618), Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (620), Flint Powers Catholic (623), Williamston (627), Ithaca (631), Lake Odessa Lakewood (643), Roscommon High (647), Macomb Lutheran North (649), Stanton Central Montcalm (653), Ludington High (654) and Lake Fenton High (666) also competed.

Individually, Grand Rapids West Catholic’s Sam Weatherhead shot 136 for the title, edging defending champion Aaron Knutson of Prep by four strokes.

Zachary Kiefer of Mount Morris, EA Johnson and Alex Reynolds of Lumen Christi each shot 144 to tie for third.

Division 4 at Michigan State University
Lake Leelanau St Mary trailed Kalamazoo Hackett by two strokes after the first day, but shot 306 on the second for a 624 total and the title. Hackett shot 313 in the final round for a 624 mark and second place.

Saginaw Nouvel carded 632 for third.

Auburn Hills Oakland Christian (642), Kalamazoo Christian (678), Fowler High (679), Suttons Bay High (680), New Lothrop High (685), Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port (700), Ann Arbor Greenhills (705), Muskegon West Michigan Christian (713), Manistee Catholic Central (721), Frankfort High (724), Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest (743) and Gobles High (748) round out the field.

Individually, Kalamazoo Hackett’s Ted Rider won the title with 142. Saginaw Nouvel’s Dave Buko carded 147 for second, and Auburn Hills Oakland Christian’s Zach Preuss was third with 148.
