Bloomfield Hills wins in overtime 1-0, advances to Division 1 state final

MIDLAND — The magic continued yet again.
One more trick will equal the program’s first state title.
“It’s massive, just an incredible win for our guys,” Bloomfield Hills High soccer coach Dougie MacAulay said shortly after a 1-0 victory against Traverse City West in Wednesday night’s Division 1 state semifinal at Midland High.
“Our goal was to reach the final,” he added. “I mean, everything to this point was great, but then when you get to the last step, that’s what really counts. Everything that comes with playing for a title is something special.”
A playoff run of dramatic wins had at least one more in store.
The teams battled back and forth all evening.
MacAulay said Traverse City controlled the first 20 minutes, or so, before his guys seemed to settle in.
Chances came and went, but none were all that serious in a 0-0 game.
Regulation came and went, as did the first overtime.
Finally, with exactly four minutes remaining in the second overtime, Ben Kileen found the back of the net.
“Huge, huge relief,” MacAulay said of the goal. “It’s tough to explain what it was like.”
Traverse City West added one final chance, but a free kick clanked off the crossbar just a minute later, officially sending the Black Hawks (16-2-5) to Saturday’s Division 1 final against Ann Arbor Skyline (20-1-5).
The game is at noon at Troy Athens.
“Don’t know anything, other then they are very good and ranked No. 3 in the state,” MacAulay said of Skyline. “We’ll have some time to get some work done and make some calls. We’ll put a game plan together and be ready to go. I expect a great a game.”
