PONTIAC/ROCHESTER HILLS — There were five Oakland County soccer teams still alive in the 2012 Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs a press time.
Two of those teams, Rochester Adams and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, have local ties.
The Highlanders (16-2-1) were two wins away from the school’s first girls soccer championship since 1999. Adams’ state semifinal matchup with Okemos took place after press time. If the Highlanders advance, they square off with either Canton or Troy in the D-1 title game, set for noon June 16 at Michigan State University.
To advance to the state semis, Adams fought to win three games on its way to a district title before winning two matches and taking a regional championship.
The Highlanders knocked off Romeo 3-0 May 29, Rochester High 1-0 May 31 and Rochester Hills Stoney Creek 2-1 June 2 to capture a D-I district crown. In regionals, Adams bested Grand Blanc 2-0 June 5 and Midland Dow 2-1 in overtime June 8 to snag a regional title.
Fighting Irish reach state semis for first time in 12 years
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep’s girls soccer team (14-5-2) earned its first regional since 2000 with five wins this postseason.
After receiving a bye through the district quarters, the Fighting Irish beat Macomb Lutheran North 3-1 May 31 and Detroit Country Day 1-0 in double overtime June 2 to win a Division 3 district.
Prep went on to take a regional title by downing Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 2-1 June 6 and outlasting Grosse Ile 4-1 June 8.
The Fighting Irish played their state semi after press time. If Notre Dame Prep advances, it would meet either Hudsonville University Christian or Muskegon Oakridge in the D-3 championship, slated for 3 p.m. June 16 at Williamston High School.
