MACOMB TOWNSHIP — Defense keyed Madison Heights Bishop Foley boys basketball in its 49-36 Dec. 12 win over Macomb Lutheran North.

The Ventures (2-1) did a solid job of staying in front of the Mustangs players. Bishop Foley also held Lutheran North (0-2) to one shot on the majority of its possessions.

“We did a better job of communicating on defense tonight,” Ventures coach Matt Stefani said. “We see a lot of sideline ball screens and that hurt us last Friday against (Rochester Hills) Lutheran Northwest. The guys tonight did a really good job of calling out the screens and rotating on defense.”

The second half was the difference. The game was played within a six-point margin in the first half, as Bishop Foley led 24-18 at halftime. The Ventures led by as much as nine points in the third quarter and took a 34-27 lead into the final frame.

A quick 6-0 Bishop Foley spurt to start the fourth quarter sealed the deal. The Ventures led by as much as 16 in the final frame.

“I thought we did a good job of handling their press and pulling them out of it in the third quarter,” Stefani said. “We knew that once we did that and got them to start playing man to man that we could get some things done.”

Mustangs coach Jeff DeMasse said his team needs time to jel. The team lost seven players to graduation and is working in several new players.

Junior forward Mike Maten and junior guard Sam Siepker each scored 15 points for Bishop Foley.

Senior center Ethan Deng and sophomore guard Colin Moldenhauer each led Lutheran North with six points.

Lutheran North’s next game is against Utica Ford II at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 on the road.

Bishop Foley next takes the court for a matchup against Sterling Heights Parkway Christian at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 on the road.
