Macomb County private school teams wrapped up their seasons in regionals. Here’s a look at how the teams from Warren De La Salle, Warren Regina and Sterling Heights Parkway Christian finished up.
De La Salle baseball falls in regional final
The latest edition of the Warren De La Salle baseball team did a lot to add to the program’s history.
The Pilots finished the season with a 22-14 record and won a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 district championship. The win total extends a streak of plus-.500 seasons that goes back to 2003. Only one De La Salle team since 1989 has finished with a losing record.
The district title marked the 19th in program history and fifth since 2009. The Pilots couldn’t get the program’s seventh regional title, though, as De La Salle fell 7-2 to Sterling Heights Stevenson in a D-1 regional final June 7 at Anchor Bay.
Stevenson senior pitcher/outfielder Brandon Hughes came through in a big spot, as his solo home run in the top of the 10th inning provided Stevenson with the winning run. The first five Stevenson batters reached base in the top of the 10th inning, as junior Riley McCauley and senior Jacob Rogers recorded two-RBI singles in the frame, as well.
Hughes’ home run, a shot over the left-field wall, came on an 0-2 pitch. He also pitched 3.2 innings in relief to keep the game tied at 2-2.
“When I came in to pitch, it seemed like everything slowed down for me,” said Hughes, who picked up the win. “I saw a fastball on 0-2, and I just ripped it.”
De La Salle coach Matt Cook made a point after the game to acknowledge the 11 seniors on the roster. That group amassed 79 wins, three district titles, a regional championship and an appearance in the 2012 D-1 state finals.
“I tip my cap to our seniors. I love those guys,” Cook said. “They fought and battled, and did a great job. I told them that it could be them accepting the championship trophy, but someone has to lose.
“They shouldn’t hang their heads about anything. They did a heck of a job, and that they should not be ashamed of anything.”
Ten De La Salle players are eligible to return in 2015, including junior pitchers Addison Pawelek and Daniel Michalak, who pitched in the regional round.
“We’ll sit down and talk to the younger guys moving forward. I feel for the seniors right now knowing this was their last game,” Cook said. “We were in position to win the game a couple of times and came up short.”
Regina softball falls in regional final
The Warren Regina softball team was looking for its first regional title since 2007 but fell just short, as the Saddlelites fell 3-2 to Utica Ford II in eight innings in a Division 1 regional final June 7 at Anchor Bay.
The Saddlelites, who won their 18th straight district title, end the season at 17-14. To advance to the regional final, Regina bested Anchor Bay 6-3 in a regional semifinal.
De La Salle golf competes at D-1 state finals
The Warren De La Salle golf team finished 14th at the Division 1 state finals.
The finals took place June 6-7 at Michigan State University. The Pilots tallied a two-day score of 628. Swartz Creek finished with a 584 to claim the D-1 state title.
De La Salle junior Martin Vanderhagen led De La Salle with a 153. Junior Kevin Campion shot a 157 over two days for the Pilots, followed by junior Matt Jozefczyk’s 160, senior Jacob Burghardt’s 162 and senior George Cornwell’s 163.
Sterling Heights Parkway Christian baseball falls in state quarters
The Sterling Heights Parkway Christian baseball team saw its season come to an end in a 5-4 loss to New Lothrop in a 2014 D-4 state quarterfinal June 10 at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.
The Eagles end the season at 26-8.
To advance to the state quarterfinal, Parkway Christian knocked off Allen Park Inter City 9-1 in a D-4 regional final June 7 at Parkway Christian.
The Eagles softball team fell 10-0 to Westland Huron Valley in a D-4 regional semifinal June 7 at Parkway Christian. Parkway Christian softball ends 2014 at 10-14.
