Barnett, Bishop seek U.S. congressional seat

ROCHESTER HILLS — Mayor Bryan Barnett has announced his candidacy for the 8th District U.S. congressional seat currently held by Rep. Mike Rogers.
He joins a list of candidates that includes another local contender: former state Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, of Rochester.
Rogers stated March 28 that he would not seek re-election.
“I can’t tell you how wild and crazy the last 100 hours have been,” Barnett said to a group of supporters when he announced his candidacy April 1 at EEI Global in Rochester Hills. “I am excited about taking what I do in Rochester Hills to a higher level.”
Barnett has been mayor of Rochester Hills for the past eight years.
“We put a strong focus on job creation, and that will be a focus of mine moving forward,” he said. “Rochester Hills has been a leader in fiscal responsibility — that’s something I want to bring to Washington.”
The decision to run for the congressional seat was not easy, Barnett said.
“You have to go with your gut,” he said. “I was encouraged by a lot of great people.”
“It was a no-brainer for me to jump on his bandwagon,” Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said. “Bryan has energy, commitment and zeal.”
“This is an exciting time for the community,” Rochester Hills City Council member Michael Webber said. “I saw the news (about Rogers) on Friday and said, ‘opportunity knocks.’ There are other people in the race that I really respect, like Mike Bishop, but someone you closely work with makes for a good decision.”
Both Bishop and Barnett are running as Republicans.
“I am excited to be running for Congress and proud to have Congressman Mike Rogers’ endorsement,” Mike Bishop said in an email. “As a conservative leader, I led the fight against Jennifer Granholm’s failed policies, and I will lead the fight against the failed policies of Barack Obama.”
Bishop is chief legal officer and general counsel for International Bancard Corp. and an adjunct professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
