Rochester High's Shwan Shadaia has his hand raised after winning a Division 1 state championship at 189 pounds.
AUBURN HILLS — Local Oakland County grapplers found themselves atop of their respective wrestling divisions March 1 at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
In Division 1 at 189 pounds, Rochester High’s Shwan Shadaia won his second straight title, beating Woodhaven High’s Derek Hillman 4-3.
Shadaia scored a takedown to take the lead 4-2 near the end of the second period. The senior then rode Hillman for a minute and half in the third before giving up an escape to make it 4-3. Shadaia then turned back Hillman’s multiple shots to hold on.
Shadaia lost to Hillman by eight points earlier in the season.
“He’s a tough wrestler. I’m just happy I won,” Shadaia said. “I just wanted my senior year with something to give to the school, because they’ve given me a lot.”
At 103 pounds in D-1, Walled Lake Central freshman Ben Freeman dominated his way to a title.
Freeman beat Monroe High sophomore Carl Antrassian by tech fall in the third period.
Freeman took Antrassian down at will, scoring two points each time, then let him up, giving up an escape point, and then repeated the process. Coupled with a near fall, Freeman eventually took a 20-5 lead to end the match.
“It feels amazing. I’ve been thinking about this forever. It feels great,” Freeman said. “Thanks to the coaches, they give me confidence.
At 125 pounds in D-1, Rochester Hills Stoney Creek senior Kyle Noonan fell to Davison High’s Lincoln Olson by tech fall. Olson is a three-time state champion.
