West Bloomfield High’s Anton Lujam goes up for a shot against Lake Orion High Feb. 25 at home. The Lakers took on Walled Lake Northern in the first round of its Class A district after press time.
WEST BLOOMFIELD — With all five local boys hoops teams playing in the same West Bloomfield district, only one can survive to play on in regionals.
The host team (8-10 overall at press time) took on Walled Lake Northern (4-15) in the first round March 3, after press time. The winner of that game is scheduled to meet Walled Lake Western (10-9) at 5 p.m. March 5.
On the other side of the bracket, Walled Lake Central (17-2) met Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (10-9) in the first round, after press time. The winner takes on White Lake Lakeland (13-6) at 7 p.m. March 5.
The championship is 7 p.m. March 7.
West Bloomfield and St. Mary’s haven’t played any of the teams in the district, but Central, Western, Northern and Lakeland all compete in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association North Division.
Central won the division at 9-1, but mostly by pulling out the close games. The Vikings beat Lakeland two out of three times, but one was in overtime, and in their last meeting, the Eagles got the best of Central by 10 points.
Against Western, Central won both games by two points each. The Vikings beat Northern twice by five and 16 points, respectively.
Western fared better against Northern, winning both matchups, but lost two to Central during the season and three to Lakeland.
Lakeland’s only losses from the teams in the district came from Central.
