The Utica Eisenhower boys basketball team will face Macomb Dakota in a matchup of 2-0 MAC Red teams at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at Dakota. Pictured is Eagles senior Alek Frascone during an early season game against Utica High.
An early lead in the race for the Macomb Area Conference Red Division title will be on the line with the girls basketball teams from Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South tangle in a matchup at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at South.
That battle highlights Jump Ball for boys and girls basketball games to be played Jan. 17-18.
Grosse Pointe North (5-3, 2-0 MAC Red) at Grosse Pointe South (10-1, 3-0 MAC Red) — 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17
The host Blue Devils enter the contest ranked No. 3 in Class A by the Michigan Associated Press. South, which has played in the last two Class A state title games, through its first 11 games is beating opponents by an average of 14.7 points per game. The Norsemen have been winning with defense. North is allowing only 39.3 points per game — 18.2 less than South averages.
Warren Cousino (4-4, 1-0 MAC White) at Utica High (3-6, 2-0 MAC White) — 7 p.m. Jan. 17
The Patriots have already passed one test this week, knocking off Port Huron Northern 62-47 Jan. 14 to give Northern its first loss in league play. The Chieftains have used divisional play to get back on track, as they are 1-6 outside of the MAC White. This should be an interesting game. Utica High tallies just 34 points per game. Cousino lets up 48. The Patriots can't afford to fall two games out of first place if they want to defend their league title.
Utica Eisenhower (6-0, 2-0 MAC Red) at Macomb Dakota (5-1, 2-0 MAC Red) — 7 p.m. Jan. 17
This is a matchup of the last two MAC Red teams that have not lost a league game. Eisenhower already earned a win over two-time reigning division champ Macomb L'Anse Creuse North. A road win over Dakota would be huge for the Eagles. The Cougars are looking to stay in the race for a division title. Dakota's program hasn't won a league title since the 2005-06 season.
