OAKLAND COUNTY — Correct Care Solutions, a correctional health care provider, awarded the Oakland County Jail the 2013 Jail Facility of the Year award.
CCS — which employs more 5,000 people across 28 states and offers medical, dental and behavioral health services for approximately 97,000 inmates — gave out the award in late December.
“This award is a testament to the cooperative relationship our corrections facility has with our inmate health care provider,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said a press release. “It’s great to be acknowledged for our dedication to excellence.”
CCS became the Oakland County Jail’s health care provider in March 2012.
Maj. Charles Snary of the Oakland County Jail said the award comes with the stipulation of meeting accreditation requirements set forth by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, among other aspects.
Correctional health care standards are the NCCHC’s recommendations for managing the delivery of medical and mental health care in correctional systems.
“(This is) big for us because that says we are providing the inmates with care necessary according to their (NCCHC’s) standards,” Snary said.
The three major components considered when selecting the recipient of the award were patient health outcomes, staff retention and satisfaction, and the relationship between the clinic staff and the OCSO staff, according to the press release.
Snary added that anytime an inmate puts in a sick call slip, the jail is obligated to answer.
“The inmates probably get better health care in the correctional system than on the street,” he said. “It is mandatory that they go through a complete health screening no more than 14 days after being admitted to our facility. We probably accomplish that in four or five days of admission.”
Bouchard said that providing a setting with quality care that is “one of the best in the country” is important for everyone.
“We appreciate our partnership,” he said of CCS.
