Winter sports season set to begin

EASTPOINTE/ROSEVILLE — As the temperatures turn cold, gyms heat up with the start of the winter sports season.
Here is a quick rundown of when each local team begins practice, has its first regular-season contest and when the state finals will take place in each respective sport.
The Roseville and East Detroit high girls basketball teams began practice Nov. 11.
Roseville’s first regular-season game is a tilt against Warren Mott, set for 7 p.m. Dec. 4 at Roseville. East Detroit opens the season with a matchup against Warren Lincoln, set for 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Lincoln.
The Shamrocks will look to improve on their 8-10 record, while the Panthers hope to best their 3-17 mark from a season ago.
The state finals take place March 15 at Michigan State University.
Roseville and East Detroit high’s boys basketball teams began practice Nov. 18.
The two teams will square off in the first game of the 2013-14 regular season in a matchup set for 7 p.m. Dec. 10 at East Detroit High.
The Panthers look to build on their 9-12 finish in 2012-13. The Shamrocks hope to improve on their 4-17 mark from last season.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals take place March 22 at Michigan State University.
Practice for the Roseville and East Detroit boys swim teams begins Nov. 25.
The teams begin the regular season with a head-to-head matchup, set for 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at East Detroit.
East Detroit will look to build on a second-place finish in the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division, while Roseville hopes to improve on its fifth-place finish in the MAC Gold.
The 2014 MHSAA state finals are set for March 7-8 at sites to be determined.
Wrestling practice for Roseville and East Detroit began Nov. 18.
East Detroit begins the season with the Takedown in Motown, set for 9 a.m. Dec. 7 at Warren Mott. Roseville opens the season with a meet against Birmingham Groves and Madison Heights Lamphere, set for 5 p.m. Dec. 12 at Roseville High.
Roseville hopes to battle its way to a third MHSAA state finals appearance in four years, while East Detroit looks to build on its second-place standing in the MAC Silver.
The state team wrestling finals take place Feb. 21-22 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek; the individual finals are set for Feb. 27-March 1at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
The boys and girls bowling season for Roseville and East Detroit began with practices Nov. 18; the regular season begins Dec. 7.
East Detroit’s girls team looks to win back-to-back league titles after claiming a MAC Blue title last season, while the Shamrocks’ boys team hopes to build on its 2-10 mark.
Roseville’s boys team hopes to break through after finishing second in the MAC White, while the Panthers’ girls team placed third in the MAC White.
State finals are Feb. 28 and March 1 at a site yet to be determined.
Practice for the Roseville and East Detroit competitive cheer teams began Nov. 11; the regular season starts Nov. 25.
In three MAC Silver Division meets last season, East Detroit tallied two third-place finishes and one second-place. Roseville High finished sixth in a 2013 MHSAA Division 1 district meet.
The state finals take place Feb. 28 and March 1 at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids.
Practice for the local prep gymnastics teams began Oct. 28; the regular season began Nov. 16.
The state finals are set for March 7-8 at Plymouth High School.
