Fraser wins district title
By Thomas Franz
Members of the Fraser team celebrate a point from a match earlier this season.
WARREN — Sometimes, the postseason is a second chance.
The Fraser volleyball team has taken advantage of that second chance and is peaking at the right time.
After a winless campaign in MAC Red play, the Ramblers swept through their district without dropping a game to advance to a regional semifinal against L’Anse Creuse Nov. 12, after press time.
In the district final against Warren Cousino, Fraser won 25-17, 25-23 and 25-14.
Rachel Parus led Fraser with 14 kills and 20 digs. Madi Speck added 33 assists and 18 digs, while Victoria Vellucci contributed nine kills and 18 digs. Kristen Siciliano had 14 digs.
“The girls played great, especially in game two. Cousino came out strong, and we were down at many points throughout the game, but we ended up pulling it out,” Fraser coach Kristi Skladanowski said. “Emily Soley, our junior middle hitter, was definitely a spark for us with her aggressive serving. She rattled off five service points in game two, and five or six in game three. She really stepped up her game.”
Skladanowski was excited about the way her team performed in district play after a difficult season in league play.
“I can’t get over how proud I am of the girls on the team because of how the regular season had gone, and for them to pull it out right now when there were so many times they could have just let it go and quit. The whole second half of the season, we did go winless, but they haven’t quit. And they keep fighting and get better every single day,” Skladanowski said.

Chippewa Valley lost to Sterling Heights in a district semifinal 25-20, 25-23 and 27-25. To get to the semifinal, Chippewa won its first-round contest against St. Clair Shores Lakeview 25-17, 25-22 and 25-21.
Chippewa closed out its season with a 15-25-4 record overall, with a 3-7 record in MAC Blue play. Chippewa had two seniors on this year’s team: Sheridan Wood and Christine Weis.
