Adams soccer team claims district title after losing in last year’s final
ROCHESTER HILLS — A year ago, they were a scorned group, one so close to their goal they could taste it, yet so far removed it was painful to even think about.
This year, well, the Rochester Adams boys soccer team made up for all that, claiming a 2013 Division 1 district title with a 2-1 victory last weekend against Lake Orion High.
“Very cool,” coach Josh Hickey said. “These guys haven’t experienced that. They knew what it was like to lose last year in the shootout but not to actually go out and win one. It was pretty cool to be part of.”
Adams earned a spot in the final, thanks to a 2-1 victory against Utica Eisenhower in the semifinal and a 2-0 victory against Romeo High in the opener.
The Highlanders advanced to their first regional round since 2010 and faced Clarkston High in a semifinal after press time.
The D-1 regional final is set for 6 p.m. at Rochester High against Traverse City West or Walled Lake Central.
“We’re finally healthy,” Hickey said when asked what helped his team get to this point. “We’ve been battling it all season, and to get everyone healthy and back and playing the way they could had a lot to do with winning this. It was a tough draw but a great accomplishment for our kids.”
