St. Clair, Utica, St. Clair Shores Lakeview win MAC boys tennis division meets

The boys tennis teams from St. Clair High, Utica High and St. Clair Shores Lakeview will enter the 2013 postseason on a high after winning their respective Macomb Area Conference tennis divisional meets, which took place Oct. 1 at various sites.
St. Clair tallied 54 points in besting seven other teams to win the MAC White Divisional tournament. Utica High notched 59 to win the MAC Blue, while Lakeview scored 23 to win the MAC Gold division meet.
St. Clair, Utica and Lakeview added to their success this year with the wins at their respective division meets, as each of those teams won regular-season league titles, as well.
Sterling Heights Stevenson scored 37 to finish second at the divisional meet. Dakota notched 32 points to place third, followed by Anchor Bay (27), Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (25), Utica Ford II (22), Romeo (18) and Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse (9).
St. Clair’s Seth Pinnoo bested Anchor Bay’s Mitchell Ryan 6-3, 6-2 to win the No. 1 singles title. St. Clair also won the No. 2 and No. 4 singles flights. Dakota’s Thomas Lauro won the No. 3 singles flight.
St. Clair’s No. 1 doubles team of Scott Conlin and Connor Winckler bested Stevenson’s Harsh Parekh and Trevor Garland in three sets to win the No. 1 doubles crown. St. Clair also won titles at No. 3 and No. 4 doubles, while Stevenson won at No. 2 doubles.
Fraser finished second behind Utica with 53 points. Marysville was next with 47 points, followed by Clinton Township Chippewa Valley and Marine City (28 each), Warren Mott (25), Port Huron High (24) and East Detroit High (23).
Utica’s Mario Russo defeated Fraser’s Ryan Papiernik 6-4, 6-1 to win the No. 1 singles title. Utica also won titles at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Marysville won at No. 3 singles.
“It feels really good to finally win it,” Russo said. “I was playing underhand a few matches over the weekend, and I guess I got used to it more, so I knew what to do after he hit the ball back, and I think that helped a lot.”
Fraser’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Derek Loewen and Adam Culver bested Marine City’s Tyler Pearson and Nolan O’Brien 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to take the title. Fraser also won at No. 3 doubles. Utica and Mott won at No. 2 and No. 4 doubles, respectively.
Madison Heights Lamphere placed second behind Lakeview with 16 points, Sterling Heights High tallied 13 points to finish third, followed by Warren Woods Tower (10), Center Line (9) and Clawson (0).
Center Line’s Brock Walquist defeated Lakeview’s Jordan Eckman 6-2, 6-4 to win the No. 1 singles title. Lamphere, Lakeview and Tower won at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Lamphere’s No. 1 doubles team of Todd Pieper and William Aman bested Lakeview’s Shane Matthews and Andrew Nadon 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to win the title. Lakeview won at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 doubles.
“It would have been nice to win it, but we know we played our hardest,” Matthews said.
The teams will next hit the court for their respective 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association regional meets, set for Oct. 10, 11 or 12 at various sites.
