The Sterling Heights Stevenson football team is one of 10 Macomb County teams that sat at 3-3 after week six. Each of those squads is trying to rack up enough wins to qualify for the 2013 MHSAA state playoffs. With wins in week six (games played Oct. 4-5), seven Macomb Area Conference football teams punched their tickets to the 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association state playoffs. To ensure a spot in the 256-team field, a team must record six wins if it plays a nine-game slate.
A number of other MAC and area teams picked up wins to improve their chances of being invited to the playoff party, while some others who had been contenders in past weeks suffered losses that hampered their playoff chances.
According to the MHSAA, for football, postseason inclusion is determined by wins and a computer point value, calculated for each team based upon its record and strength of schedule, with the top 256 teams (including all teams with six victories if playing a nine-game schedule) qualifying. These 256 teams are then ordered by enrollment and divided into eight divisions of 32 teams each.
Here is the third weekly installment of the C & G Sports MAC and county football playoff picture. Each week, we will give you a snapshot of which local squads are in line for postseason berths. This week, we begin with teams that are now a lock to qualify for the postseason.
Clinton Township Chippewa Valley: 6-0, 3-0 MAC Red — Beat Anchor Bay 42-6 Oct. 4 to earn a second straight playoff berth. This will be the Big Reds' 11th playoff appearance since 2000. Chippewa Valley's best showing in that stretch came in 2003 when it advanced to a Division 1 state semifinal.
Macomb Dakota: 6-0, 3-0 MAC Red — Knocked off Warren Cousino 42-6 Oct. 4 to clinch its 12th consecutive playoff spot. The Cougars have played in three state semifinals and two state finals in that span. Dakota won a state title in 2007.
Warren Mott: 6-0, 3-0 MAC White — Defeated Utica Ford II 55-7 Oct. 4 to earn its third straight and seventh playoff appearance in eight years. The Marauders will be looking to make some noise in the postseason, as they have yet to advance past district play.
St. Clair High: 6-0, 3-0 MAC Gold — Bested Marysville 36-13 Oct. 4 to earn a spot in the playoffs for the second straight year. Prior to that, the Saints hadn't seen the postseason since 2007.
Marine City: 6-0, 3-0 MAC Gold — Downed St. Clair Shores Lakeview 55-6 Oct. 4 to lock up its 16th straight and 19th playoff appearance in 20 years. Marine City won a state title in 2007 and lost in another finals appearance in 2011.
Madison Heights Madison: 6-0, 3-0 MAC Silver — Beat Mount Clemens 35-19 Oct. 4 to earn its eighth straight playoff berth. That string includes a trip to the Division 5 final in 2006 and Division 5 semis in 2007.
Clinton Township Clintondale: 6-0, 3-0 MAC Bronze — Downed East Detroit High 39-0 Oct. 4 to earn its sixth playoff appearance in 10 years. The win was also the 16th straight regular-season triumph.
Macomb L'Anse Creuse North: 5-1, 2-1 MAC Blue — Defeated Harrison Township L'Anse Creuse 50-20 Oct. 4 to move one game closer to locking up a playoff spot. The Lancers sat in the top 25 percent of teams with one loss of the MHSAA playoff point summary as of Oct. 4.
