MOUNT CLEMENS — A 2 1/2-hour standoff at a Mount Clemens apartment building on Oct. 1 ended rather peacefully after unanswered phone calls and knocks on the door compelled members of the Macomb County Sheriff’s SWAT Team to force their way inside where they found their suspect unconscious.
The incident on Beyne Street near Clinton River Road began at approximately 8:33 a.m. when the sheriff’s Emergency Dispatch Center started receiving calls about an armed man making threats at his neighbors.
According to Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, witnesses reported that the man, 63, was in a verbal confrontation with his neighbors. Amid the argument, the man reportedly entered his apartment unit and quickly returned with a rifle in hand. Witnesses told sheriff’s officials that the man pointed it at his neighbors before going back inside his apartment.
“(The argument) stemmed from him (the suspect) accusing them (the neighbors) of taking a check of his, which they didn’t know anything about,” said Wickersham.
Members of the SWAT Team as well as hostage negotiators stayed at the scene attempting to get the man to exit his apartment and surrender himself and his weapon to authorities.
The four unit apartment building had been evacuated before SWAT members made their way toward the suspect’s unit. Wickersham said they forced their way inside at around 11 a.m. and found the suspect on the floor, unconscious.
“We woke him up, took him into custody and he was taken to the hospital for evaluation. He’s still there,” Wickersham said shortly after the incident. “We don’t know why he was passed out.”
The suspect’s name has not been released as no charges have been brought against him yet.
Wickersham said his deputies have had contact with the suspect in the past, but nothing of a serious nature. Specifically, he said, neighbors had contacted authorities about a suspicious person in the area; that suspicious person being the suspect.
