Warren Cousino No. 1 singles player Brad Brown, a senior, and his Patriots teammates won the first annual Tennis For Troops tournament.
WARREN — The Warren Cousino boys tennis team was victorious at the first annual Tennis For Troops Tournament, which took place Sept. 14 at Halmich Park in Warren.
The Patriots (4-2-0, 0-1-0 Macomb Area Conference Red Division) bested Fraser in the final to claim the title. Cousino and Warren Mott served as hosts of the tournament.
Warren Mott biology teacher Dawn Ross said the first annual Tennis For Troops tournament was a success.
“We wanted to honor our troops and nothing like this has been done in any sport, so we thought we would champion the cause,” said Ross, who helped coordinate the event.
Eight local boys prep tennis teams took part in the event, as they worked to raise money for the city of Warren War Memorial. Teams that participated were Warren Woods Tower, Madison Heights Lamphere, Fraser High, Center Line High, St. Clair Shores Lakeview, Macomb L’Anse Creuse North, Mott and Cousino.
Fraser’s Ryan Papiernik claimed the No. 1 singles title, beating Macomb L’Anse Creuse’s Mike Manfredo. Fraser also walked away with the No. 1 doubles title, as Ramblers Derek Loewen and Adam Culver bested Warren Mott's No. 1 doubles team Evan Hynel and Andrew Moronczyk.
Each team was been given a branch of service to raise funds for. The team that raised the most money to donate will won a free team dinner at Vivio’s in Warren. Funds raised hadn’t been tallied at press time.
In an opening ceremony, service men and women were honored and the Marines Color Guard brought in a flag just prior to the start of play.
The event featured an “honor table,” where patrons of the tournament brought a photo of a service member they would like to see recognized. Dog tags were sold for $5, with the funds going toward the War Memorial.
