WARREN — Macomb L’Anse Creuse North football coach Anthony Kiner said his team’s Sept. 6 meeting against Grosse Pointe South could prove to be the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division championship game.
Last season, South eeked by LCN 28-27 and finished undefeated in conference play to win the MAC Gold. The tough loss was the only league setback the Crusaders suffered last season.
The game is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at LCN.
“My mind’s already on (Grosse Pointe South),” LCN senior quarterback Sean Koski said following the Crusaders’ season-opening 42-37 win at Warren Cousino Aug. 29. “After that last kneel down, I was already thinking about that game. That’s the MAC Blue championship in some people’s minds, and we’re going to be ready for it.”
Kiner said the Cousino game helped prepare LCN for the showdown with Grosse Pointe South. The Crusaders had to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit before pulling out the win.
LCN outscored Cousino 28-13 in the second half of the Aug. 29 contest after falling behind 24-14 at halftime. Koski accounted for all six Crusaders touchdowns in the opener — five passing and one rushing.
“I think this game gets us ready, and I think the boys know if they don’t come out in the first quarter, they’ll lose,” Kiner said. “We think (Grosse Pointe South) is a great team. We know they’re going to have a great scheme, and we know they have a great team.”
The loss to Grosse Pointe South in 2012 was one of three for LCN, which finished 2012 8-3 and advanced to the district round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 state playoffs. It was a bounceback year for the Crusaders, which went winless in 2010 and 2011. The postseason appearance was the first for LCN since 2007.
