Woods-Shores baseball team on its way to Little League World Series

When the 2013 Little League Baseball World Series kicks off Aug. 15 in Williamsport, Pa., the Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League baseball team will be one of 16 national and international teams vying for the 2013 Little League Baseball World Series title.
The Woods-Shores team, representing the Great Lakes region, will square off against the West region representative (Eastlake Little League, based in Chula Vista, Calif.) in a matchup set for 3 p.m. Aug. 16. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN.

The Woods-Shores team battled its way to Williamsport by winning the Great Lakes title in games played Aug. 3-10 in Indianapolis, Ind. The Woods-Shores squad went 4-2 in winning the Great Lakes Regional Title, besting Illinois 10-3 in a regional final played Aug. 10.
The Woods-Shores team, coached by Tom Mozzola, advanced to that regional final in dramatic fashion, as Tommy Maxey — pinch hitting in the bottom of the sixth and final inning — blasted a three-run walk-off home run to give the Woods-Shores squad a 5-4 win over Ohio in a regional semifinal played Aug. 8.
