Police searching for cellphone thieves

Metro Detroit police are looking for three men involved in stealing high-end cellphones from local stores over the past month.
In St. Clair Shores, a man entered T-Mobile on Nine Mile Road around 6:30 p.m. June 15 and ripped an iPhone5 on display from its tether, then ran out of the store.
On June 28 around 7:30 p.m., three men entered the same store and were recognized by employees as the same men suspected of stealing cellphones from a store in Detroit the day before. The three split up and acted as if they were talking on phones while in the store, then one said, “Forget this, we’re out.” The then three grabbed display phones — two iPhone 5s and one Samsung Galaxy — from their security cords and started to leave the store.
St. Clair Shores Police Sgt. Jay Cohoe said the employees knew what was happening because they had been notified by T-Mobile security, so one employee tried to lock the door before the trio could escape.
“He (the employee) was grabbed by one of them and thrown down,” Cohoe said.
And then, because the door opens inward, the trio broke it as they made their escape.
Cohoe said the men are also suspected in similar larcenies from stores on Gratiot and Harper avenues in Detroit and in stores in Oak Park and Warren. They also believe the men committed a similar crime July 9 at a Verizon store in Dearborn.
“(The men) seem to be targeting cell phone stores that are adjacent to freeways or major roadways,” he said.
Anyone with any information on the suspects is asked to call police at (586) 445-5305.
