FAIR HAVEN — The Sterling Heights Stevenson baseball team won a 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 regional title by besting Warren Cousino 10-2 in a regional final that took place June 8 at Anchor Bay High School.
The Titans (28-8 at press time) went on to beat the University of Detroit Jesuit Academy 10-7 in a D-1 state quarterfinal played June 11 at Wayne State University to advance to the state semis in Battle Creek, played after press time. The win gave Stevenson its first trip to the state semis since 2011. See next week’s paper and our website at www.candgnews.com for full coverage of Stevenson’s trip to Battle Creek.
“We’re excited. This is fun,” Titans coach Joe Emanuele said.
The Titans came within three outs of going home earlier than expected.
After falling behind Macomb Dakota 5-0 in a D-1 regional semifinal, the Titans rallied to score six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Cougars 6-5. The win marked the third time Stevenson beat Dakota this season.
The Titans sent 10 batters to the plate in the last inning, recording seven hits and two walks in tallying six runs. Sophomore Brandon Williams lined a shot to right field to score the winning run in the regional semi.
“We just talk about never giving up,” Emanuele said. “That was a really emotional game. Did I think we were going to win down 5-0? Probably not. But I thought if we were able to get some guys on, and then we got the bases loaded, and I started to think we had a chance.”
The Titans rode that wave of emotion to their second regional title in three years (2011). Stevenson jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Cousino in the regional final and never relinquished it.
“That’s a heck of a ball club over there. After that first game, I didn’t think there was a team in the state that was going to beat (Stevenson) in the final,” said Patriots coach Justin Newcomb, whose team finishes the season at 23-10.
“That was a great team win, and they rode it to a regional title.”
Emanuele said his team was very emotional after the win over Dakota. He said getting to Cousino’s pitching early in the regional final was key.
“We were on the ropes a couple of times in the first couple of innings, and I was worried about getting down again,” Emanuele said. “We got to a really good pitcher, and that I’m very proud of.”
Ford II falls in state quarters
The Utica Ford II softball team saw its season end in an 8-6 loss to Garden City in a 2013 D-1 state quarterfinal played June 11 at Wayne State University.
The Falcons, which won district and regional titles, finish with a mark of 29-12.
