The fifth Michigan Soccer Classic Memorial Day Tournament is scheduled to take place May 24-26 at Borden Park in Rochester Hills.
The event features U6-U19 select and recreational teams from Michigan, surrounding states and Canada.
According to Linda Schlaupitz, the tournament’s director, there are thousands of participants each year, with both boys and girls teams invited to participate. Co-ed teams get placed in the boys division.
Schlaupitz thinks the tournament offers an enjoyable atmosphere, for the players, as well as their family members.
“It’s family-friendly,” she said. “Usually, it’s more of a fun atmosphere. Usually, the families will attend together. There is a lot of team camaraderie going on.”
Approximately 100 squads are scheduled to participate, with teams placed in divisions based on level of competition.
After each squad plays three preliminary games, a fourth and deciding game will determine the first-place team from each division, with a trophy being awarded to the winner.
If things go the way Schlaupitz hopes, the tournament will grow even more in the future. In addition to continuing to host games at Borden Park, she is not ruling out the possibility of expansion in the coming years.
“What I would like to do is grow even bigger, where I need to get more facilities around the area,” she said. “Right now, I just have Borden Park. I (want to) have everything centrally located.”
Any team registering after April 23 faces the possibility of limited availability.
The cost to participate can range from $295 to $550, based on the age of the team being registered.
