BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Many people may not realize that one of the nation’s first cosmeceutical companies was launched right in metro Detroit more than 50 years ago — but the skincare products first developed by Dr. Robert Fosnaugh and continued by his daughter are gaining popularity all over the country.
The Clinage Skin Care Rejuvenation Systems won the Best Beauty Product Award at Fashion Group International Detroit’s inaugural awards ceremony Dec. 6. Founder and President Marcia Fosnaugh Avis said she has made it her life’s mission to improve the skin health of people of all ages.
“I’m very proud and appreciative of this award, and I’m hoping we can get the word out about Clinage products,” Avis, a lifelong Bloomfield Hills resident, said.
“We’ve been around a long time, and our goal this year is to introduce the public to our products and show them the benefits. The Internet is a great way for people to be introduced to our line, but we really want them to come in and touch, feel and experience the products for themselves.”
She said the Clinage line is designed for skin of all types and ages and works to produce plumping, firming cell production; minimize pores and stretch marks; and reduce the effects of acne and scarring.
“The most important part is the fact that we are a true cosmeceutical company, which means we use medical-grade substances that produce physical changes to the skin and truly dramatic results,” Avis said.
“It’s very easy to use. It’s available to the general public. It’s affordable, and the word of mouth keeps us going. People start using it and never stop.”
The late Fosnaugh dedicated 48 years to treating dermatological skin disorders and conducting reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. In 1959, he began testing skin care products under lab conditions, resulting in a line of products used in his clinic.
Avis, who had been witnessing her father’s work since she was just 4 years old, joined his practice after college and worked in the lab, developing topical treatments and products for acne, pigmentation and skin aging. In 1993, she founded Clinitone Skin Care and began marketing those products to other doctors and skin care professionals.
Among the most popular Clinage products now are the Vitamin C Home Peel Kit and other vitamin A, C and E products.
“The home peel is very popular because it allows the general public to do the three-step peel at home, work on specific areas and skip the dermatologist, saving thousands of dollars,” Avis said.
Clinage consultants offer group seminars at the Fosnaugh Center in Southfield and at in-home sessions to help educate others on the product line.
“We teach at beauty schools and we teach doctors,” Avis said.
“We’re highly education-oriented. We want everyone to understand what’s going on with their skin, and as we’re repairing, we’re also preventing. Our products are made from substances that are pure and clean and safe, and they really do structurally change the skin.”
Clinage retail manager Kelley Bushey said customers who visit the Fosnaugh Center can discuss their skin concerns with professionals.
“Marcia is really good at what she does — we can get a look at someone’s regiments and habits, and she can diagnose immediately why someone is having breakouts or issues,” Bushey said.
“I’ve had a lot of customers that have tried so many other products, but they say this is the only thing that works.”
So, what’s the worst thing for skin? Avis has one word: sun.
“About 80 percent of our aging comes from the sun or from tanning booths,” she said.
“We are irradiating and damaging our skin and moving along the continuum from a normal cell to a cancer cell. One of the No. 1 killers of young adults is melanoma because of increased sun exposure and tanning booths. It’s cumulative from the day we’re born, all that cumulative radiation brings you to today’s date.”
