New Harrison High School principal appointed

At a Farmington Public Schools Board of Education meeting Dec. 11, Lawrence Stroughter Jr. was appointed to the position of Harrison High School principal.
FARMINGTON — After months of searching for the right administrator, a new Harrison High School principal has been found.
At a Farmington Public Schools Board of Education meeting Dec. 11, the school board voted 6-0 to appoint Lawrence Stroughter Jr. to the position of Harrison High School principal. Board Vice President Howard Wallach was absent.
Catherine Cost, district assistant superintendent for K-12 instructional support services, made the recommendation to the board.
“This is one of the proud moments of my role here in the district,” she said. “We know he is the right fit for Harrison High School.”
Stroughter was chosen from 62 candidates who applied for the position. He steps into his new role in January.
“I’d just like to say thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to serve in the capacity of Harrison High School principal,” the new principal said. “I appreciate the trust and that opportunity you have given me.”
During the meeting, Strough-ter briefly introduced his wife and three children to the audience.
Stroughter has already met staff and students at Harrison, and Cost said the educator is “currently enrolled in a doctorate program at Eastern Michigan (University).”
The former math teacher most recently was the assistant principal at Salem High School in the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools. He also served as instructional leader of the district’s math department and worked as the evaluator of 28 core-subject teachers at PCCS.
Transitioning from integrated math to traditional math in 2009, and currently transitioning from traditional math to common-core-aligned mathematics have occurred during Stroughter’s tenure in Plymouth-Canton. According to his résumé, the Michigan Merit Examination scores increased with the changes.
“This reality is a result of several factors, such as carefully monitoring student achievement by means of creating, interpreting and communicating statistical analysis, which required many difficult conversations in public and private settings and in both written and verbal formats,” his résumé states.
Stroughter earned his Master of Education degree in 1998 from Wayne State University. He also influenced students during his time at Cass Technical High School in Detroit Public Schools.
