Swim, dive season comes to an end
Local athletes fare well at state finals

ROCHESTER — The girls swimming and diving season came to an end Nov. 17 with the MHSAA state finals. Several local teams and individuals took home trophies and medals, when it was all said and done.

Holland West Ottawa won the trophy at the Holland Aquatic Center, finishing with 293.5 points. Farmington Hills Mercy saw its state title streak snap at six, as the Marlins ended runners-up with 272 points.
Other local teams scoring points are Lake Orion (14th place, 57 points), Chippewa Valley (22nd, 18), L’Anse Creuse North (24th, 16), Fraser High (29th, seven) and Utica Ford II (31st, six).
Elliott Schinella took first in the 100-yard backstroke and fifth in the 50 freestyle. Maddie Loniewski won the 200 IM and was sixth in the 100 breaststroke. Kathleen McGee placed third in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Roxanne Griffore finished fourth in the 100 freestyle and eighth in the 50 free. Ellyse Conn was sixth in the 100 backstroke. Annie Valentine finished eighth in the 100 butterfly.
In the relays, the 200 medley team of Schinella, Loniewski, Conn and Griffore took fourth. The 200 freestyle team of Griffore, McGee, Valentine and Christine Edwards was fifth. The 400 freestyle squad of McGee, Conn, Valentine and Loniewski placed fourth.

Taylor Zablocki took third in the diving competition.
Sydney Ronald finished fourth in diving.
Holland High won its second straight title in D-2, taking first with 311.5 points at Oakland University. Grosse Pointe South was third with 190 points, followed locally by Birmingham Groves (fifth, 152), Rochester Adams (sixth, 142.5), Bloomfield Hills Marian (seventh, 142) and Birmingham Seaholm (eighth, 140).
Other local teams scoring points were Walled Lake Western (24th, 20), Royal Oak High (26th, 12 points), Farmington High (27th, 10) and Bloomfield Hills Andover (27th, 10).
Adams coach Tim Hickey called the meet “insanely fast.”
“We had a few new teams in our division, which really made things a lot faster this year,” Hickey said.
Grosse Pointe South coach Eric Gunderson agreed.
“This is a faster meet this year than it was last year,” he said. “The cuts were faster to get in. The top 16 and top eight times across the board were faster.”

Catie DeLoof won the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100 freestyle. Gabby DeLoof was second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 IM. Clair Young finished sixth in the 100 backstroke. The 200 medley relay team of Young, Jennifer Maiorana and the DeLoofs finished in second place. The 400 freestyle relay squad of the DeLoofs, Maiorana and Cassandra Moore was third.
Hanna Pfershy finished fourth in the 50 freestyle. Merrill Watzman was seventh in the 500 freestyle. Kelly McGowan placed seventh in the 100 backstroke. McGowan, Anna Lockwood, Pfershy and Beth Moran were fourth in the 200 medley relay. Pfershy, Alysse Fischer, Watzman and McGowan placed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.
Keegan McCaffrey was third in diving. Theresa Riviera placed fourth in the 200 freestyle. Bianca Tiberio finished eighth in the 100 butterfly. The 200 medley relay squad of Hanna Hunstad, Hannah Buchanan, Tiberio and Krystal Karas was fifth. Tiberio, Hunstad, Alexa Graf and Karas teamed up for a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The 400 freestyle relay team of Karas, Riviera, Hunstad and Tiberio was sixth.
Bloomfield Hills Marian
Mollie Pulte won the 200 freestyle and took third in the 100 freestyle. Madison Taylor finished fifth in the 200 freestyle and eighth in the 500 freestyle. Maren Taylor was seventh in the 50 freestyle. The 200 freestyle relay squad of Pulte, Hannah Richard and the Taylors placed fifth. The 400 freestyle relay team of Pulte, Madison Taylor, Madison Clement and Christina Schott also finished fifth.
Mykala Arnold took third in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 100 backstroke. Celia Hoag was sixth in the 100 breaststroke. The 200 freestyle relay team of Elizabeth Ahern, Morgan McKay, Ella Waechter and Sydney McKay finished eighth. The McKays, Waechter and Arnold teamed up to place seventh in the 400 freestyle relay. Arnold, Hoag, Mia Deighan and Ahern were sixth in the 200 medley relay.
Miranda Shelly was fifth in the 100 butterfly.

Allie Murphy broke the state record while winning the diving competition.
