PONTIAC — The Pontiac Notre Dame Prep volleyball team is headed back to the Michigan High School Athletic Association Class B state quarterfinals after besting Warren Fitzgerald 3-0 (25-13, 25-6, 25-9) in a Michigan High School Athletic Association Class B regional final played Nov. 8 at Notre Dame Prep.
The Fighting Irish (52-9-4) move on to face North Branch in a quarterfinal. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Notre Dame Prep.
The win gives the Fighting Irish their sixth regional title and first since 2008. Prep is seeking its second state title after going all the way in 2007.
The Fighting Irish have not lost a game this postseason.
"I thought we played a little sloppy but we were able to persevere," said Prep coach Betty Wroubel, who called North Branch possibly the toughest team in the state. "That's a lot better than the alternative, and we get to play again."
The Spartans (15-2) end their season after winning the program's first district title.
"I couldn't be more proud of the girls and how hard they played," Fitzgerald coach Maria Marcotullio said. "They gave 110 percent, and it's sad the score doesn't show that, but they played as hard as they have all year."
In the first game, the Fighting Irish led for all but one point — when the game was knotted at two early. Prep built as much as a 12-point lead in the first stanza on their way to striking first.
Prep dominated the second game, jumping out to an 11-1 lead and built a 15-point advantage before closing out the match with a 14-point win in the third.
This is the Fighting Irish's fifth regional title since 2005 but first for this group, which features just three seniors.
"This all started with the loss to Marysville in a regional final last year. That got them really focus and that's coming to pass," Wrouble said.
Prep knocked off Macomb Lutheran North in a regional semifinal played Nov. 6 to move on to the regional final. The Fighting Irish downed Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day 3-0 Nov. 2 to claim the school's 15th district championship — all since 1997.
Fitzgerald got by Detroit University Prep 3-1 in a Class B regional semi played Nov. 6 at Notre Dame Prep. On its way to the school’s first-ever district championship, the Spartans knocked off Detroit Pershing and Ferndale High 3-0 in the district quarterfinals and semis, respectively. Fitzgerald beat Hazel Park High 3-1 in a Class B district final played Nov. 2 at Fitzgerald.
