Sterling’s St. Blase to host diversity concert

STERLING HEIGHTS — St. Blase Catholic Church is known for its music.
They’ll share it with the community at 3 p.m. on Oct. 7, along with the music of other groups from throughout Macomb County, at the second annual Diversity Concert, “Respect for all Creation,” to benefit the Interfaith Center for Racial Justice.
According to the Rev. Michail Curro, executive director of the ICRJ, the first concert was held in 2010 at St. Blase as a way to share the music of the church’s programs — and those of other groups in the county — with visitors willing to travel to one place, for a good cause.
After a one-year break, the concert is back on and set to feature a variety of performers.
Among those scheduled to perform are the gospel choir from the Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Clemens; the Warren Community Chorus, directed by Kingsley Sears; the choir from the Holy Martyrs Chaldean Catholic Church; an a cappella choir from the North Broadway Church of Christ; the Hearts on Fire praise band from the King of Kings Lutheran Church; and two choirs from St. Blase, led by Steve Petrunak.
Indian dancers from the Bharatiya Temple of Metropolitan Detroit, under the instruction of Sandhya Sree Athmakuri, are also scheduled to perform.
“Celebrating the growing diversity that’s in Macomb County, and highlighting the diverse forms of music, that was pretty much the inaugural idea,” Curro said. “There’s so much talent in the county, and there’s people coming from all over the county to benefit the Interfaith Center.
“Our office is in Mount Clemens. We’re all over the county. This is just another opportunity for us to highlight the awesome diversity that’s growing in Macomb, as well as to treat people to some wonderful music and entertainment. I think people will leave with a real sense of their spirit being filled and feeling like it was time well spent, for a good cause, as well.”
Tickets for the ICRJ benefit concert at St. Blase, located at 12151 15 Mile Road in Sterling Heights, are $12 per person; $10 for seniors 65 and older; $8 for children 5-12; and free for kids 4 and under.
Concert tickets can be purchased online at www.icrj.org, and at St. Blase, both at the door and in advance. For more information, call (586) 268-2244.
