MOUNT CLEMENS — The Center Line High volleyball team trailed only briefly in the second game of its Sept. 11 matchup at Mount Clemens, as the Panthers downed the Bathers 2-0.
Center Line (2-1, 0-0 Macomb Area Conference Silver Division) led by as many as 10 points in the first game on its way to a 25-16 win. Mount Clemens (2-2, 0-0 MAC Bronze) closed the gap to 21-16 before the Panthers closed the first game on a 4-0 run.
The Bathers struck first in the second game before Center Line rallied to take an 11-6 advantage. Mount Clemens closed the gap to 11-10 with four straight points, but the Panthers went on a 15-5 run to take the second game 25-15.
"I thought we played really well today. We converted a lot of early points. It was a good win," Center line coach Len Hernandez said.
Bathers first-year coach Jason Monk said he's seen his team play better. Both teams had a number of unforced errors, surrending points on missed serves.
"We'll be better. We just have to learn to play through adversity," Monk said. "We're in a rebuild, and we have a ways to go, but we're getting there. I can see it. We just didn't play well today."
Center Line next hits the court for a matchup with St. Clair Shores South Lake, set for 6 p.m. Sept. 13 at Center Line.
Mount Clemens for its next game travels to Warren Fitzgerald for a matchup slated for 6 p.m. Sept. 13.
