Thaier Mukhtar will be the new boys varsity soccer head coach at Fraser High. Mukhtar, who recently resigned from the same post at Warren De La Salle — which he held for 29 seasons — has coached the girls team at Fraser for the past nine years.
“I’m fired up,” Mukhtar said. “I’m very, very excited for this new challenge in my life.”
In his time at De La Salle, Mukhtar won five state titles, 25 district titles and 18 Catholic High School League titles, earning several coaching honors along the way while sending dozens of players on to play in college. And with the girls at Fraser, he has transformed the program, winning several MAC titles, advancing in the postseason and in the ranks of the conference’s elite.
Fraser’s boys last won a division title in 2006, playing in the Macomb Area Conference’s Blue Division. The Ramblers finished 10-6-3 overall and in second place of the MAC White last season.
“I knew his track record. I knew what he could do with the program,” Fraser Athletic Director Brad Robinson said. “His track record with girls has been incredible. We would expect the same with the boys program.”
Mukhtar said his positive relationship with the Fraser girls program “played a huge part in me choosing Fraser.”
He said his coaching staff from De La Salle would be joining him at Fraser in starting a new “legacy” and “chapter.”
“We have one goal in mind, and that’s to put Fraser (boys) on the map for soccer.
“My girls walk around with a swagger. We want the boys to have that kind of pride the girls have,” the coach said. “Hopefully, we’ll upgrade the program, upgrade the schedule. Our goal is within a year or two to be in the (MAC) Red Division and be one of the top programs in the MAC and county.
“We’re going to outwork everybody; we’re going to be organized,” Mukhtar continued. “We’re going to come at teams with everything we have and not make it easy for any team.”
Mukhtar to be honored by soccer alumni
Several De La Salle soccer alumni are hosting an event to honor their former coach and wish to extend the invitation to other past players and students, and their families. The event is at 7 p.m. July 20 at the Palazzo Grande in Shelby Township.
Tickets are $40 per person and will include appetizers and bar. For more information on the event and to purchase tickets, contact Skipper Mukhtar at (586) 942-9412 or at email@example.com.
