Police looking for flasher

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Police are looking for a heavy, middle-aged man accused of flashing and fondling himself late in the evening at a scrapbooking store this month.
Police Chief Robert Leman said officers were called to a scrapbook supply store in the 46000 block of Hayes Road, just south of 21 Mile Road, around 10:15 p.m. Aug. 20. At the time, a handful of women were in the back of the store working on their scrapbooks and only the 35-year-old clerk was working in the front of the store.
Leman said the clerk told them that the man came in and was hanging around the front counter of the store, and he smelled strongly of intoxicants.
“She kind of … started walking away (and) at that time, he pulled down his shorts, exposed (himself) and made some motions up and down,” Leman said.
The entire scene was captured on the store’s surveillance cameras. Leman said the suspect was a white man in his mid-40s wearing a blue T-shirt and blue shorts. He was about 6 feet tall and about 300 pounds, with a fair, clean-shaven complexion and short gray hair.
“She saw him and then went back to the back room … she reported to her manager and then they called police,” Leman said. “In the video, you see him leaving right after she takes off toward the back; he pulls up his shorts and walks out.”
Leman said they have not had any similar reports in the township but are checking with local agencies to see if the man has done this before.
“Clinton Township had, it sounds like, a similar case and our detectives are talking to them to see if it is,” Leman said. This is the “first time we’ve had this (from this suspect) and my assumptions are that he isn’t dangerous.”
Anyone with any information on the suspect is asked to call Shelby Township Police at (586) 731-2121.
