EASTPOINTE — With only a handful of games on a prep football squad's regular-season schedule, getting off to a good start can be a key factor for teams hoping to make the playoffs, and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett did just that via a 28-0 win against Detroit Edison Public School Academy.

The Knights' first touchdown of the game came in the first minute of game action, as Thomas Jackson  threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Charles Caine to give Liggett an early 7-0 lead.

It didn't take long for the Knights to get on the scoreboard again, as quarterback Connor McCarron threw a  touchdown pass to Will Morrison with 7:11 remaining in the first quarter.

Liggett got on the scoreboard one more time in the first half, when McCarron connected with Caine on a 51-yard yard touchdown pass with 57.8 seconds remaining in the first half.

"It was great," Liggett coach Dan Cimini said of how exciting it was to play the opening game. "There's nothing like Week 1. This is what you want — 28-0 win, game one. Lot of young guys did a lot of good things for us today."

Liggett's David Newman shared his thoughts regarding Liggett's opening-game victory.

"We started off well," he said. "We played a good game, overall. We're feeling good."

The Knights' second half touchdown came via a touchdown run by Morrison.

The Knights' opening day victory was considered a home game and came at Memorial Park in Eastpointe. Until further notice, the Knights are expected to play home games away from Liggett until a new turf field is put in at the school.

Offensively, McCarron threw for 117 yards, with Caine accounting for 97 yards for the Knights.

On the defensive side of the ball, Caleb Stokes and Spero Kefalonitis each contributed nine tackles.

Liggett is next scheduled to play at 2 p.m. Sept. 6 against Royal Oak Shrine Catholic.
