Sterling Heights Public Library patrons will soon learn that spinach, broccoli and all of their nutritious friends can peacefully coexist with the American dinner plate.

Library programming specialist Kathryn Ribant Payne said this month brings back local chef Francine Pamela Salvatore to share some of her favorite leafy recipes at a Feb. 27 vegan/vegetarian cooking demonstration.

Salvatore has done two other cooking demonstrations at the library, and her events have been successful, library officials say.

“She is very popular. She is so knowledgeable. It’s like watching a cooking show on television,” Ribant Payne said.

“We have had feedback from people that they wanted to kind of shake things up a little bit … to incorporate more healthy vegetables into their eating.”

Salvatore is expected to cook a few vegetarian meals, and then guests will be able to taste them. The audience will also receive handouts that discuss ingredients and cooking tips, Ribant Payne said.

Salvatore, a certified chef and caterer, said she is in the process of moving her catering business of 15 years, Pamela’s Catering, from Romeo to Washington Township.

Although this is her third time presenting at the Sterling Heights library, she said she has conducted cooking demonstrations at other Oakland and Macomb libraries over the last decade.

“I’ve done bread pudding; I’ve done salads with a kick,” she said. “I’ve done casseroles … pastas. I’ve done Mexican, Greek food.”

Salvatore said she still hasn’t planned out a menu or program for the upcoming library event, but she said she will most likely incorporate salads and vegetarian protein dishes.

Although the event singles out vegetarians and vegans in its appeal, anyone who wants to incorporate more veggies into their meals will find value in it, she said. She said she wanted people to be aware of healthy diet alternatives — and that vegetarian eating doesn’t have to be bland.

“You can still get a dietary balanced meal out of eating vegetarian, and the people love it because my recipes are simple,” she explained. “You can go to one grocery store and buy everything.”

The Sterling Heights Public Library, 40255 Dodge Park Road, will host a vegetarian and vegan cooking demonstration with chef Francine Pamela Salvatore at 7 p.m. Feb. 27.
