HARRISON TOWNSHIP — One of Harrison Township’s trustees is stepping down.

Jack Swiatkowski, 71, was first elected onto the board in 2008. He said last week that his decision to leave his seat effective May 12 wasn’t a sudden one.

“This is something we’ve been talking about for a while,” he said, referencing himself and his wife, Marge Swiatkowski. “I’ve spent the last 10 months mulling it over.”

The Swiatkowskis — Marge recently stepped down as president of the Harrison Township Library Board — have sold their home and will be moving to Florida next month.

Jack Swiatkowski, a resident of the township for 16 years, is retired from the Sterling Heights Fire Department. He was on the township planning commission for five years before being elected trustee six years ago.

The couple, who will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in September, cite “personal changes” for their decision to move.

“I really enjoyed being on the board, but the time has come to close this chapter and start another one,” he said.

Meanwhile, the township is looking to fill Jack Swiatkowski’s vacant seat; a seat that will be up for election in November 2016.

Supervisor Ken Verkest said applications are currently being accepted from qualified residents and will continue to be accepted until May 20, when the board will hold a special meeting to discuss each applicant’s qualifications and possibly make a vote.

“It will be in open forum, there will be a public-comment section, and the applicants are welcome to attend and offer more information about themselves, and even answer questions,” Verkest said.

He said at press time last week, the township had received three applications from interested residents.

The board has 30 days from May 12 to fill the vacant seat. If they do not, a special election will be held.

Applications can be picked up at Harrison Township administrative offices at 38151 L’Anse Creuse.
