Take the work out of finding a work vehicle

When contractors, trade workers and small business owners need to advance their business goals, they often turn to purchasing their own work van, truck or other vehicle. And local dealerships say automakers have a variety of models up to the task.
Brendt Henry, new car manager at Dean Sellers Ford in Troy, said work vehicle customers, such as plumbing companies, enter his dealership to purchase vehicles. Some business customers purchase a single van, while others order fleets of as many as 25 or 40 vehicles, he said.
“I think the market has changed a little bit,” he said. “The economy is up. People are spending some money. … I think it’s all across the board. I don’t think it’s just the small guy or the big guy. Everyone is buying.”
Henry said the most popular commercial vehicle his dealership sells right now is the latest version of the Ford Transit, which he said has overtaken the Ford Econoline van. He said the Transit comes in different heights and wheelbase lengths to accommodate customers with different needs.
A smaller Ford Transit Connect can also be a good fit for cleaning companies or flower delivery businesses, he said. The Ford F-Series of trucks also has a business fanbase, he said.
“That’s the bread-and-butter general contractors,” he said.
Henry encouraged business buyers to take some preparation time assessing how much cargo they plan to carry, how much cargo space they need, or whether people need to stand inside the vehicle while working.
“A lot of the guys that are working in the trades, I think they know what they want before they even walk into the door,” Henry said.
Brett Amesse, sales manager at Orchard Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Washington Township, said he has seen small businesses purchase the Ram ProMaster City work van. He praised the vehicle for its gas mileage as well as the visibility it grants the driver.
“The windshield is very big, so it’s easy to get around, and the mirrors are bigger for backing up into loading docks,” he said.
