Hundreds of people braved the gusty winds and rain waiting in line to be some of the first inside Rochester Hills’ newest discount retailer, Stein Mart.

The Jacksonville, Florida-based discount clothing and housewares store is located at 1122 Rochester Road, a former Borders location, in Rochester Hills.

As the masses waited in line for the doors to open the morning of Nov. 12, the Rochester Hills Fire Department was on hand with emergency personnel to assist a couple of people who passed out.

Doreen Higgins, of Troy, was one of many people shivering in line as she waited to get a peek inside.

“I love Stein Mart. I have two brothers who live in California, so I know Stein Mart from visiting them. I’ve just been waiting for it to open,” she said. “It’s exciting to see what this store will offer, because I loved what I saw in California and I’m excited that it is here, opening in Rochester Hills. They always have some fun, upscale stuff.”

Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett said Stein Mart has “incredible fans” throughout the country. Locally, since the sign was put up signaling to passers-by that the retailer would be opening in Rochester Hills, he said, there has been “incredible interest” from the community.

“This is undoubtedly the most anticipated ribbon cutting, at least this year,” he said.

Barnett said the city of Rochester Hills is happy that Stein Mart chose Rochester Hills for its first venture into southeast Michigan.

“Our residents are also happy to have (Stein Mart). One lady, we don’t know her by any other issue except that she calls us about every 10 days and says, ‘when is Stein Mart opening up?’ I think she is in line today, so we are excited to finally answer that question for her today,” Barnett said.

As Stein Mart Rochester Hills general manager Jason Adkins watched the crowds of hundreds filter into the store, he was amazed by the customer support.

“We are so excited to be here, and the turnout is fantastic. I couldn’t be more excited,” he said.

Adkins said the store offers current season, brand-name fashion for women and men, accessories and shoes, home décor and linens at prices up to 60 percent below department store prices.

“We have top quality, great looking, unique merchandise,” he added.

The Rochester Hills location will be Stein Mart’s second in Michigan — the state’s first Stein Mart store opened in 2001 in Portage, near Kalamazoo — and is one of 11 new sites the retailer plans to open this year. Other locations, according to the company, include Atlanta; two stores in Florida; three stores in southern California; one in Long Island, N.Y.; one in Phoenix; and one in Virginia Beach, Va.
