ROCHESTER/ROCHESTER HILLS/OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — The Rochester Community Schools Board of Education kicked off its first meeting of 2018 by electing new officers.

Sandy Fiaschetti was unanimously elected by her fellow board members to retain her seat as board president for another year.

Fiaschetti — a member of the board since 2015 — was nominated for the position by board Vice President Kristin Bull. Bull said she recommended Fiaschetti as a testament to her “steadfast leadership” of the board and as “a commitment to the continuity of leadership and service of this district.”

Fiaschetti accepted the nomination and said she is also in favor of continuity on the board.

“I think we all learned a lot this year, and I think we would like to do something even more with that learning,” she said.

The board, which elects members for various leadership positions each January, also unanimously approved Bull to retain her seat as vice president and Michael Zabat to retain his seat as treasurer.

Michelle Bueltel was elected to serve as secretary, replacing Kevin Beers, who agreed to fill in as secretary after Beth Talbert resigned from the board in June. Beers, Barb Anness and Pat Piskulich serve on the board as trustees. Board selections are nonpartisan, and board members receive no compensation.

RCS Community Relations Director Lori Grein and Superintendent Robert Shaner thanked the board members for their dedication to the district during the Jan. 8 meeting.

“What most people don’t realize is that you are volunteers. You don’t get paid for this, and the amount of work for doing what you do is tremendous,” Grein said.

“Thank you for your service. It is an honor to serve with you and serve the community at such a high capacity. It has been said multiple times, but the amount of time and due diligence that you put in on behalf of our students is greatly appreciated,” Shaner said.

“We really appreciate the recognition, but it’s not why we do what we do,” Fiaschetti added.

RCS board meetings are held at 7 p.m. on scheduled Mondays in the Harrison Room of the district’s Administration Center, 501 W. University Drive. Board “chats” are held prior to regularly scheduled meetings at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are videotaped for replay on the district’s community-access cable TV channel.
