A bank robbery suspect was shot by a Huntington Woods public safety officer after the suspect led police on a chase that ended in Pleasant Ridge.
According to Pleasant Ridge City Manager Sherry Ball, the suspect robbed the Chase Bank at 26363 Woodward Ave. in Huntington Woods this morning and fled in his vehicle. Several local police units pursued the suspect as he drove southbound on Woodward.
The suspect then exited his vehicle near I-696 and Woodward and attempted to continue fleeing on foot. However, the chase came to an end when a Huntington Woods officer shot the suspect on Woodward, near Oxford Boulevard. The suspect was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, but Ball said that she does not think his injuries are life-threatening.
Ball also noted that Pleasant Ridge Police Chief Karl Swieczkowski fell and injured his leg during the foot pursuit. He was sent to the hospital as a precautionary measure, but he is expected to be available for comment later today.
Huntington Woods public safety was unavailable for comment immediately. A department employee said that public safety officials are continuing their investigation and are not currently speaking to the media.
