At approximately 2:05 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, the Shelby Township Police and Fire departments responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a black 2017 Lincoln MKZ at 25 Mile and Mound roads.

Shelby Township Police Lt. Jeff Daniel said that upon arrival, police discovered that the passenger, Brittney Dushaj, had been ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. At approximately 1:35 p.m. Feb. 6, Deputy Police Chief Mark Coil sent out a press release saying that Dushaj had died earlier in the day as a result of her injuries.

Coil said the driver and the passenger were 16-year-old twin sisters from Macomb Township. Daniel said that they both suffered injuries in the crash, and the Shelby Township Fire Department transported them both to Troy Beaumont Hospital.

Daniel said police closed the roadway for approximately three hours for the investigation. He said police do not suspect alcohol use to be a factor in the incident.

“They were heading south on Mound and ended up losing control of the vehicle,” Daniel said. “They hit a couple of trees, but the most damaging thing they hit was a DTE telephone pole.”

He said the crash was not a rollover.

Shelby Township Fire Chief Jim Swinkowski said Dushaj was ejected 25-30 feet. Daniel said that she was not wearing a seatbelt and it was unknown if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Coil said the investigation is ongoing, and police have not yet determined the cause of the crash.

“We don’t know if it’s a distracted driving or speed-related issue,” he said in a Feb. 9 interview with C & G Newspapers. “We can’t say definitively yet, but hopefully we have something by the end of the week.”

Police urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the Police Department at (586) 731-2121.
