One man was killed and several other people were injured after a double rollover accident at Metropolitan Parkway and Dodge Park Road July 29.
According to the Sterling Heights police, officers dispatched to the area at around 1:30 p.m. found a Chevrolet Trailblazer and a Toyota Camry overturned in the Metro Parkway median, both with “extensive damage.”
The initial investigation reportedly indicated that the Trailblazer was heading west on Metro Parkway when its front end collided with the driver’s side of the Camry, which had been traveling south on Dodge Park.
Police indicated that one of the motorists had disregarded a red light, leading to the crash, but as of July 31, investigators “were still trying to determine which one had the red signal,” said Lt. Luke Riley of the Sterling Heights Police Department.
The Camry’s driver, a 31-year-old Sterling Heights resident, sustained what police originally classified as “life-threatening injuries” and was transported to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township. Riley said the man died of his injures July 30.
His passenger, a 28-year-old Sterling Heights resident, also was transported to Henry Ford Macomb, but suffered only minor injuries.
The 46-year-old Sterling Heights resident driving the Trailblazer suffered minor injuries, as did a 14-year-old passenger; paramedics treated them at the scene. A second passenger, a 54-year-old man, was uninjured.
Riley said he was uncertain whether the victims had been wearing seatbelts.
A section of westbound Metro Parkway at Dodge Park Road was closed while officers conducted their investigation, with the roadway reopening around 6 p.m. According to police, alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the incident.
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the traffic safety bureau at (586) 446-2920.
