From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, McLaren Macomb will host its inaugural Shelby Creek Medical Center Health and Safety Fair to equip parents and students for the upcoming school year while offering them a chance to have fun.
Community partners will provide kids activities, and McLaren professionals will offer health tips for parents in the center’s parking lot. Organizers will collect backpacks filled with school supplies to donate to less fortunate students at the event.
“We are here and chose this profession because we are dedicated to contributing to the wellness of our community, and nothing is more important than sharing the well-being of our kids,” said Tristan Guevara, a family medicine physician and managing director of Shelby Creek Urgent Care, in a statement.
The fair will offer health information and guidance to parents in areas such as vaccines, concussions and common childhood conditions; CPR demonstrations; child identification by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office; ideas for healthy snacks and lunches; and more, according to a McLaren press release.
Along with tours of Shelby Creek Urgent Care, there will be vouchers for discounted sports physicals, face-painting, arts and crafts projects, games, music, and refreshments at the fair.
The first 200 to register will receive free gifts and be entered to win a family four-pack of tickets and refreshments at Jimmy John’s Field, according to the release. Participants can preregister for the giveaway at www.mclarenmacomb.eventbrite.com.
“The businesses and community support has been tremendous,” said Karen Tucker, a McLaren marketing specialist. “We’re really excited about being involved in this.”
She said McLaren had been looking to do a community event to kick-start the school year and, with the help of the community, everything came together.
“With kids going back to school, (we wanted to provide the) things they need to build their steam and just feel good about coming back to school,” Tucker said. “Michigan First Credit Union (will also be there to address) the financial health of kids, trying to instill the healthy concept of having good financial common sense. It all comes together.”
