MACOMB TOWNSHIP — More than 600 people attended the 30th annual Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Holiday Celebration of Macomb County, hosted by the Interfaith Center for Racial Justice.

Government, school, cultural and religious leaders from throughout the county visited Dakota High School for the Jan. 16 event that shared a common message of continuing the hard work necessary to create justice for all.

FARMINGTON HILLS — The Jewish and African-American communities will soon join forces to celebrate a king, Martin Luther King Jr.

The celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, set for Jan. 16, will take place Jan. 15 with “Creating the Beloved Community — A Time for Healing: An Afternoon of Song and Inspiration” at 3:30 p.m. at Adat Shalom Synagogue, 29901 Middlebelt Road.

Adat Shalom Synagogue, Greater New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church will honor King’s legacy at the event.

ROSEVILLE — Rosie Chapman, also known as “Miz Rosie-The Storyteller” will bring the life of Martin Luther King Jr., as seen though the eyes of his wife, Coretta Scott King, to the Roseville Public Library at 11 a.m. Jan. 16.

Roseville Public Library Assistant Director Annamarie Lindstrom is excited about Chapman coming back to the library.

ROYAL OAK — After attending a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Walled Lake last year, Royal Oak Schools Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin made a vow to himself that he would not let another year pass without the community having an appropriate event to recognize the holiday.

With the help of other like-minded people, and planning that began in June, the superintendent’s vision was put into reality.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — Nearly 50 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood at a podium inside the Grosse Pointe South High School gymnasium, speaking to a crowd of about 2,700 people.

The civil rights leader presented a speech known as “The Other America” at the school March 14, 1968. Three weeks later, on April 4, King was shot and killed while standing on a motel balcony in Memphis, Tennessee.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — The West Bloomfield community will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, set for Jan. 16, with a United We Walk event the day before at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at West Bloomfield High School.

Jennifer Graham, a Roosevelt Elementary School first-grade teacher and United We Walk Committee representative, spoke during a West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees meeting Dec. 19 and encouraged everyone to attend.

DETROIT — Tour de Troit, the largest organizer of group bike rides in Detroit, is inviting the public to grab their bikes and dress in layers for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bike Ride.

This is the fifth year the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bike Ride has taken place in Detroit. It follows the path of King’s 1963 Walk for Freedom through Detroit during his fight for civil rights.
